Course Learning Objectives (CLOs):

Understand the basics of After Effects, including the interface, tools, and features. Create motion graphics, animations, and visual effects using After Effects. Apply color correction and color grading techniques to enhance video footage. Use keyframe animation and interpolation techniques to create smooth motion graphics. Work with layers, masks, and effects to composite multiple elements in a scene. Create 3D text and objects using the 3D toolset in After Effects. Use advanced compositing techniques to combine multiple elements in a scene.

Specific Learning Outcomes (SLOs) :
By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and explain the basic functions of the After Effects interface (SLO 1)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the workspace layout, toolbars, panels, and menu systems. Create a simple animation using keyframes (SLO 2)
  • Use the Timeline panel to create a basic animation with movement and scaling. Apply color correction and color grading techniques to a video clip (SLO 3)
  • Use the Color Finesse panel to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue of a video clip. Create a mask using the Pen tool (SLO 4)
  • Use the Pen tool to create a mask around a specific object or area of an image. Composite multiple elements in a scene using layers (SLO 5)
  • Use the Layer panel to combine multiple video clips, images, or text layers in a single composition. Create 3D text using the 3D toolset (SLO 6)
  • Use the 3D tools to create 3D text objects with depth and perspective. Explain advanced compositing techniques for combining multiple elements in a scene (SLO 7)
  • Describe techniques for blending modes, opacity levels, and layer ordering. These CLOs and SLOs provide a clear outline of what students will learn throughout the course, and serve as a framework for assessing student understanding and mastery of key skills.
